The 7 Mile Itch

I did it. I ran 7 miles today! I'm still using the Galloway walk/run method, and I'm loving it. I can not believe I'm up to this distance already! My pace is staying steady around 12:15 (Hey, I've made it perfectly clear I'm content in my turtle-ness) and I feel good after my runs. I've switched over to using G2 for my hydration (I love the lemon-lime flavored powder, mixing & freezing my bottle the night before so it stays cold during my run) and am still using 1 GU at 2 miles. Do you think I should add in a second GU anywhere as my distance increases? Right now I'm finishing right around 1h 25m for 7 miles.

Today I had something happen that hasn't happened to me yet, and I'd only heard rumors of. I had an 'invisible' mile. That's right - a mile I never knew I ran! Mile 4 - 5 seemed to pass without my knowing I was running. Amazing! I was talking on and on to Hubster about random topics and before I knew it I had reached 5 miles. Wow! Now, this meant the last two miles felt extremely hard to make up for my 'lack of perceived effort' from 4 to 5. Oh well, win some lose some. :)

It's also really nice that my 'wall' (where I feel I really have to push myself from that point to the end of my run) has moved from 2.5 miles to 5 miles!! I've doubled my comfort zone! If someone were to say 'hey, want to go out for an easy 5 miles?' my answer would now be 'absolutely!' instead of 'huh? 5 miles? are you crazy?' like it was 2 months ago. Awesomeness my friends!

I really feel like I'm earning my new bumper magnet I have on my car:
I hope everyone has a stellar week ahead, and to all you runners that raced the RnR Chicago 1/2 - Way To Go!!! And I'll be perusing your race reports as they get posted. Need all the help/tips/encouragement I can get before my 1/2 in TWO MONTHS!! eek!

  1. Awesome job! I used to have those invisible miles and I'm hoping for some again before too long!

Last year I ate a GU or shot block or whatever every 3-4 miles during my long runs. This year I think I'm going for gummy bears as they taste so much better and the consistency doesn't bother me nearly as much.

  4. awesome. sounds like you had an incredible run!! :)

i didn't start using gels until got to the 8-10 mile range. i think you should just listen to your body when deciding when to add.

  5. Great job! I would say go for a second gel once you hit 10 miles. You could do one gel every 45 min.
