Gadget Highs and Running Lows

My Garmin came today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (If I use anymore exclamation marks will you hit me??) !!!!!!!!!!!!

I spent the whole day at work feeling tired, congested, sick, just icky. I also spent the whole day thinking 'ugh....I want to run tonight so bad...but I'm afraid I won't be able to with this cold'. I finally get out a few hours early (there is a God!) and call DH on my way home. He asks if I'm planning on going to the gym tonight. I tell him that I got off early, so there is enough daylight for a little run outside (even though it's cold), but that I'm not sure if I should because of my cold. He then informs me that I have a new 'gadget' waiting at home. WHAT?!?!?!?!?!? I think he has lost his hearing in that ear. I was so excited! Definitely running!

I get home and rip the package open (with the help of my kitty...or maybe a little shameless pet-modeling here)

As I'm opening the packaging and playing with all the parts I see something a little funny....
This product can cause cancer???? HAHA! An item used to promote health and well being has a cancer-warning label??? Wow. Oh well, worth the risk. :)

It has enough battery out of the box for a quick jog. I suit up and give DH my best impression of a Power Ranger...

Outside it's a little chillier than I had expected, and I had forgotten about our wind gusts today. Brrr. Not so bad on my body, torture on my sensitive sinus passages. I get through my warm up and start the first run, not so bad. It was fun watching my pace (which was a little faster than I had thought when running blindly) on my Garmin. After a few minutes I could feel the pain from the cold air. I walked for a minute and picked up running again. This time I turned a corner and faced a hill, I had forgotten about that hill. Oh boy. Up I go. I managed to reach the top and continue slowly running down the rest of that street to reach 1 mile for my workout. I realized at that point that I was too congested to keep going. Reluctantly I turned to home and walked to cool down on the way. Grrr.

I was very upset with myself, after having such a good run Monday I was wanting to really push myself today. But sometimes I guess we have to let our bodies take the lead, and mine was saying 'enough!'.

I didn't get to play with my Garmin as much as I would have liked, but at least I gave it a shot tonight. I'll be staying at a hotel for my birthday this weekend (headed to O-town! well, the mouse house, same thing) and have already staked out the health club (no outdoor running paths...trust me, I looked there first lol). I'll be able to get a good treadmill run in there on Friday, and hopefully I'll be feeling better so I can prove to myself I'm not a lazy a$$.

A few quick last notes:
Felice is giving away a pair of Champion shorts over on her blog 'The Happy Runner'

For those Garmin users out there....tell me about how you love yours, neat features to use, and how it's improved/changed your running. :)

  1. Your blog is adorable! How come I've never been here before? I love you! I have a new Garmin that my hubby gave me for Christmas. It's a 405 with a heart rate monitor. I love many things about it but the two most important are: 1) It's round and smaller than the other 305 that I had and 2) I love downloading my info. on my computer and seeing my HR and splits. I'm sure you're going to love your Garmin, enjoy!

  2. I love my Garmin because I can use it on for so many things. I even use mine when I take walks. I don't rely on the calorie counter, and the exact mileage, because I run in an area with lots of trees. I do use it more for use of heart rate at points along my run.

    Good luck with yours!

  3. I found your blog through a RunnersWorld post (adequately named something like "post your blog here!"). Sooooo, hopefully you don't mind some stranger following you. (By the way, I'm BeanFace on RW - I haven't posted much there, but I lurk... a lot.) :)

I have a Garmin 305.. and I love it! It's great to know exact mileage, check out the info on the whole run, and keep you consistent during races. I wore it all the time when I first got it. After the initial joy of the new toy wore off, honestly, I got a little bogged down worrying about my times and have more recently left it at home for most runs. My advice is to enjoy it, but don't get TOO stressed with paces and times!

Sorry about being sick! I hope you get better...dont' push yourself too hard like I did because you might end up sick for a whole month! Ugh.
